Dr. Stephen McKenzie earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Old Dominion University in 2011, in which his clinical rotations strongly emphasized orthopedics and sports medicine. He also earned his B.S. in Business, double majoring in Finance and Management from Virginia Tech in 2007.

Since graduating, he has bolstered his clinical skills by completing numerous continuing education courses, including courses focused on the mechanical diagnosis and treatment of back and neck pain (He is certified in MDT “McKenzie Method”); Trigger point dry needling specialization; Spinal manipulation; numerous courses on running medicine encompassing treatment of foot/ankle pathologies and lower quarter injuries and Video Gait Analysis for runners; obtained certification from The Titleist Performance Institute to Master the skills to evaluate and optimize a golfer’s performance by understanding the critical connection between body movement and swing efficiency; and many other sports medicine related courses. Stephen has represented the practice as an adjunct professor for Old Dominion University’s Physical Therapy doctorate program in the past and continues to support the program helping taking interns within Direct Performance on a yearly basis.

His clinical practice includes working with athletes of all experience levels, ranging from recreational/beginner athletes to semi-pro and professional athletes.
